Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay occurred on the 24th of August 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was introduced to the arts from the aunt Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse who did night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her time to literature, theatre, and art. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay became enthralled by the film. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother who was a social sassy and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay's summers spent in Selma, Alabama would be the inspiration for her later the film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood in California in the year 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles after graduating, where she was awarded qualifications in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began producing in broadcast journalism when she was still at college. She began her career as an intern for CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to observe the house of a member of the jury, and then examine their junk. DuVernay was dissatisfied with the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the field of public relations. DuVernay found a job immediately after college as a young publicist for a studio. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was founded in 1999.
